H.E.R. Has Released A Stirring Music Video For “Fight for You”

H.E.R. has released a stirring music video for her Judas and the Black Messiah anthem “Fight for You.”

The visual pays homage to the Black Panther Party and their efforts to support and uplift the community, despite government opposition. It opens with a 1971 shooting involving a Black man and a white police officer, with H.E.R. narrating the tragic cycle of violence against Black Americans that has impacted many over decades.

“Last night they killed one of us… again. More fuel to a raging fire you can’t pray away. Not with a gun pointed at your back or the ground at your face,” says H.E.R over footage from the Fred Hampton biopic. “I think back to what my father says, ‘Like strange fruit, it gets too bitter to taste.’”

In the video, H.E.R. helps her father by delivering shoes to family and friends, the heels stamped with Hampton’s famous declaration, “I am a revolutionary.” Her hope is to inspire each individual to organize an uprising for change.

H.E.R. previously performed “Fight for You” during ABC’s Soul of a Nation special Tuesday night. Next, the Grammy-winning singer will perform alongside PJ Morton, Yolanda Adams and Freddie Gibbs & Alchemist for the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective’s inaugural event ahead of Sunday’s 63rd annual Grammy Awards Sunday. The BMC’s first-ever Grammy Week event takes place tonight at 8 p.m. ET on Grammy.com.
